Rooms with the ability to multi-task are essential when living in a small home. Our dining room is the largest room in the house (about 13' x 14') and as a result has handled double duty as an office space for the last few years. It all began about 4 years ago before the birth of The Boy when extra bedroom #3 was converted to a nursery.
The office corner fiasco started innocently with the placement of a vintage breakfast table that belonged to my grandparents. Followed by a computer and a table lamp. Time passed andwe I haphazardly added to the corner piece by piece...
After several years, the small "desk" and assorted office equipment wedged in the corner became cluttered and wildly inefficient. Keep in mind the area underwent significant paper-pile sorting and all-around stuff straightening just prior to the above photo.

So in a desperate fit of I've-finally-had-enough-of-this-mess The Plan was hatched to construct a larger family-friendly workspace.
The week of the radiator removal, we plunged headlong into this project.
You can read about the initial stages of the project here and here.

We embarked upon another do-it-yourself project
(BECAUSE WE JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH)
in an attempt to bring a little sanity to an otherwise chaotic space.

I used to dread this corner but now it is a much calmer place to be.
Family Workspace is still a work in progress
but overall the space has a more pulled-together & comfortable feel.
Kind of like in a way maybe we sort of have our act together, a little bit.

The Family Workspace project has resulted much needed storage and an overall sense of order in the room. So that's a win. It has also provided us with some cabinet installation experience. That will be important somewhere down the home renovation road (ahem, BUNGALOW KITCHEN!?!) which is also a win.
We've carried this little project through to the stage where it is functional. So I think it's safe to say we can cautiously chalk this one up as a project victory?
Of course I'm still working through a few design elements. Specifically knob selection (harder than I thought it would be) and completing the staining/sealing of the wood top pieces. I am not 100% committed to the depth of the 2 desk top pieces. They strike my eye as awkward. I prefer the look of the bench section.
I'm leaning towards revising the depth a bit to streamline the fit. I'm also conveniently stuck in full-on decidophobic mode. Handy Husband spent an awful lot of time in the workshop with tiny pieces of dowel rods, glue and wood planers to create the desk tops in the first place. He will not be happy if I ask him to change it. Which probably means I will end up asking him to change it.
Also on the To-Do List: creating a specific plan for organization in the newly reclaimed storage space. *YAY* I smell a trip to the Container Store for bins and baskets and boxes - OH MY!

I'm gonna organize the daylights out of these cabinets.

It looks fantastic! I love how fresh and organized it is. I could be seriously productive in that space. :)
ReplyDeleteoh i am LOVING it!! you have one of the MOST beautiful homes I've ever seen!! I'm partial to bungalows...I grew up in one :) built in 1928.
ReplyDeleteTerrific job! What a great place it will be to work in.
ReplyDeleteThat looks so good! What a handy husband you've got!
ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic! What an amazing job you did on it!

Ladies, as always, thank you for your kind words and positive feedback. We are very pleased with the progress made on this little project!
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice looking. Good job.
ReplyDeleteIt looks GREAT!!! Gives me lots of ideas for my own home! I think it would work nicely in a kids play/lounge space to add their computers to either of side of the window! Thanks for sharing this!!!
ReplyDeleteGREAT JOB! I vote to keep the desk overhangs as is. (1) Your husband won't hate you and (2) it's better desk space.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is beautiful. So clean and crisp. Dream worthy!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great space! We created a sewing nook for me in our den this weekend after I had it with not having a central place for all my snip-snip stuff.
ReplyDeleteI like the depth of the work stations. Would you go shallower? Wouldn't your knees hit or you'd have to sit at an uncomfortable angle that might end up hurting your back? I work from home so I'm all about setting up my desk for maximum comfort :)
This looks great! Definitely unifies the space & gives you more opportunity to stay organized! Hope you saved that little table that you had your computer on before though cuz it is adorable!! :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely keeping the little blue table. It currently serves as a folding table in the laundry area.
ReplyDeleteI am planning on using the table as a desk/workspace (again) in the finished basement family room.
Reserving judgment on the final desk top dimensions until I have a chance to see how we really use the space. The work area was designed to function with a desk at either end. Time will tell if we actually utilize the desks as intended!
ReplyDeleteI can understand liking a more streamline look but the desks at each end look great- like they should. That said, if the desks don't end up being used as desks, maybe the extra edge will be out of place. Hope you do get good desk use out of your great update. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing! I love how you added the built-in cabinetry. It makes the space look so much more polished.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love the way it turned out.
ReplyDeleteoh gorgeous gorgeous! I just found your blog via csi and love your header too - off to explore more!
ReplyDeleteYour house is so cute! I'm following you so that I might have some decor ideas when I get a place of my own.

I love love what you have done - so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI can empathize with wanting to change the desktops (my own handy hubby has had the pleasure of my change of mind).
...had you considered some "legs" for the portions of desktop that are visually bugging you? - I saw Centsational Girl add some in her kitchen around the stove - and just though the idea may apply here, too.
...Love your blog thanks for sharing your hard work!
I absolutely LOVE this transformation! Great job and great idea!! You really came up with a solution to your "problem area". Love the planning here!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up to A Design Story's Sunday Blog Parade. Hope you will come by again this week!!
