Painted Farmhouse Bench

I would be lying if I told you "I don't love this bench":

Norfolk Bench
My name would be Liar because I would be telling you lies.

Norfolk Bench
Because I do so love this creamy white loveliness of a bench.

Norfolk Bench
I mean, come on, just LOOK at this beauty.  It's over 5 feet long!  It has grace!  It has charm!  It's grand and glamorous and requires not one but TWO fancy schmancy chandeliers.  TWO CHANDELIERS!  It also requires 500 bucks + shipping.  OUCH!  Alas, my bench love is not meant to be.

Norfolk Bench
Or IS IT?

While on the rebound from the heartbreak of the glorious white bench, I stumbled across this farmhouse bench.  I see it and I'm thinking hmmmm....perhaps this can replace the big bench shaped hole in my heart?  The smaller size (4 feet long), smaller price and beautiful curvy legs make it a fantastic companion piece to our farmhouse dining table

This unfinished bench is currently available on the Target website (really, Target!) with free shipping and can be returned to your local Target store if you change your mind.  It's a sturdy well-made little bench constructed of rubberwood.  No MDF, no wood veneers, no nonsense.  If you can get the bench on sale, it's an even better deal.

It is delivered flat-packed and ready for assembly which makes it a DIY dream for refinishing.  Using supplies we already had on hand, I gave the bench apron and legs two light coats of primer (Rust-oleum primer spray paint $3) followed by a dose of Heirloom White (Rust-oleum satin finish spray paint $4).

The bench top received three coats of primer (Kilz 2) applied with a brush.

For the bench seat I used a leftover sample jar of Behr Ultra Premium Plus flat wall paint.  "Sculptor Clay" was a shade that didn't quite make the cut for the dining room wall color.

A single light coat of color was painted on with a brush over the primer.  While the paint was still wet, I rubbed the edges lightly to give the bench a worn and well-loved look.

When the top coat of paint was dry (flat paint dries very very quickly) I added a little extra bit of personality with fine grit sandpaper.

I used a quick drying coat of clear gloss spray paint (Rust-Oleum $4) for the bench to achieve a smooth shiny finish over the flat paint and distressing.  The gloss top coat will help protect the painted finish and make the bench easier to wipe down after messy meals with the kids.

Take THAT Pottery Barn!

  1. Ah, Target saves the day! Yeah! I love the color you chose for the top of the bench--and distressing anything is always good in my book. Great job!

  2. I must be the only person who hardly ever shops at Target, but that looks like a great bench. I like the two toned paint and the colors you used. How long did it take before you kids started pushing each other off the bench? When I was a kid, it wouldn't have taken my brother and I long, especially if we were fighing!

  8. Oh, nice!

We bought a wood buffet like thing from Target back in 2000 and it's so sturdy it's made its way into our basement as a work table, so I have high hopes for your lovely farmhouse bench.

  9. So where'd you learn to do all the nifty (nifty?!) DIY stuff, or was it trial & error and lots of Googling?

  14. so cute. I have what looks like the same table, minus the paint and a bench as MY seat. My bench is a painted 'junk' find. My dog sits next to me on the bench. I know that may seem disgusting, but that's how we roll, me & Hoochie side by side at the dinner table. Daddy & the kids get their own chairs.
Thanks for sharing, love your site.

  15. I definitely would have preferred a junk find but donated our old dining chairs to the ReStore & needed something to sit on ASAP! Super smart, right? Nothing like a little desperation to work up a some motivation...

This is my first furniture purchase from Target and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the bench. I think their furniture is a lot like Ikea, mostly crap but with a certain percentage of fantastic finds.

Compared to some of the other seating I was considering this was a great deal.

Solid wood + free shipping = SOLD!

  17. Looooove it! I wonder if it couldnt be made with a few table legs, 1x4's and either a 1x12 or cut a nice peice od plywood down... I WILL be attempting this soon... :). Awesome post, and much inspiration. Can I link to your blog?

  18. Becca,

Thanks for stopping by. Please feel free to link.

I think you could certainly make a custom bench with hardwood lumber available from your local hardware store. If you go with a soft wood like pine (depending on the bench size) I would add extra legs in the center for support.

Let me know if you try, I would love to see how it turns out!

  19. Hi there!

I've just been admiring your blog and I'm your newest follower!

Love the bench and the treatment you used. We have the same bench at our dining room table. Don't you love the mix and open feel?! I love your choice of chairs, also. Looks great!

  20. Hi Michelle - Thanks for visiting!

At first I was unsure how a bench would "fit" into the dining room, but have ended up loving it. Since we have downsized our dining table the bench adds much needed seating versatility when we entertain.

    1. Hello & Welcome!

The woven chairs are the "Majby" chairs from Ikea

  34. My daughter just bought a table exactly like yours off craigslist but with four drawers in the table. It came with four matching chairs but all off whitish to match the table finish, but she has a big kitchen and wanted a bench. I went to Pottery Barn, they no longer offer the bench...so I google Norfolk dining bench and up pops your blog and miracle of miracles Target still offers the bench! Thank you so much for sharing your great idea and bench find! Can't post a pic here to show you how well hers will look when we get it but just wanted to let you know you helped her tremendously with her first house decorating!
