To Knob, Or Not To Knob

One more dining room post (for now) before heading back down into the basement for some long overdue Project Basement related ramblings.

I have been hunting halfheartedly for cabinet knobs to bring the Family Workspace one stop closer to completion.  I would like to find a reasonably priced something that works with the "built-in" look and doesn't scream "HEY YOU! HEY, LOOK AT US! WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE? WE'RE KITCHEN CABINETS FROM IKEA CRAMMED INTO A CORNER OF THE DINING ROOM!"  I'm also partially certain I would prefer to use knobs and not handles.

Here is a quick look at the dining room as it appears today:

We chose to use the Ikea Ramsjo cabinet door for this project.  It features a painted white-washed style finish that allows a peek at the wood grain detail below.  The primary knob of choice would be wood, finished so perfectly to match the doors that it practically disappears.  That's what I want.  Invisible knobs.

Sadly, the white finish on the cabinets is not an easy to mimic flat painted finish, there's a little depth in there.  It will take some trial and error to copy the finish to meet my OCD standards.  Also bad timing as I'm feeling especially lazy right now in the Painting Tiny Knobs department.

Bring on the secondary knobs! The readily available  alternatives to wood are made predominantly from metal, ceramic, glass.

Perhaps hardware with a little bit of contrast is the  solution?

We need 8 knobs, one for each of the 8 doors, installed in the following locations:

Next, please let me introduce the knob options currently under consideration:

1. Hedra 2. Liberty Glass Knob 3. Lindsdal 4. Classic Ceramic Knob
Ikea Hedra (#1) is great because we have 40+ on hand since I removed them from the Hemnes dressers in the bedrooms. BUT, I fear dark colors.  Can I handle this knob?
The Liberty Glass Knob, from Home Depot, has always been my go-to knob. I used a version of these on our Hemnes dressers to replace the Hedra.

I like #3 (Ikea Lindsdal) except for the exposed screw.

The detail on Target's Classic Ceramic Knob is pretty, but I suspect it won't play nice with the Ramsjo.

What do you think?  Any favorites?  Any suggestions or recommendations?  I'm leaning towards #1 just to get the whole thing over with.  Cabinet knob shopping is not my forte.  I've explored off-the-shelf options at my regular shopping spots but I don't get out much.  I'm pretty sure I need to broaden my retail horizons, but not too broad because to many choices tend to result in complete decor paralysis in this house.

Where do you shop for the perfect "I'm-a-kitchen-cabinet-pretending-not-to-be-a-kitchen-cabinet" hardware?

  1. Being cheap at heart - I would try out #1.
If it doesn't work out I like #3 but agree the
exposed screws mess the look up. #4 would be my next choice.

  2. I like option 2, but I think that's because I'm mildly obsessed with glass knobs...

  3. I saw this china cabinet and thought it could be a good option to emulate for your own to give it a more historic built-in look.

  4. I saw option one in person, i love the industrial look and the design, but it is so tiny, IMO.

Since you highly incorporate the "wood" look, how about going all out with that: http://www.rejuvenation.com/fixshow2144/templates/selection.phtml

    I also love these: http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=77423&catId=HOME-HARDWARE-COLLECTIONS&pushId=HOME-HARDWARE-COLLECTIONS&popId=HOME-HARDWARE&navAction=jump&navCount=6&color=aqu&isProduct=true&fromCategoryPage=true&templateType=D

and you can mix and match the colors!

  5. Julie: I totally agree, hooray for cheap!

Jen: nothing wrong with a little obsessing, especially when it comes to little glass knobs...

Becky: I want THAT cabinet! So understated and beautiful! It makes me want to rebuild the built-ins differently all over again. Do over!

Starlet: I am truly, madly, deeply IN L-O-V-E with those ceramic melon knobs from anthropologie.

Everyone, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for sharing your comments & suggestions. I really appreciate your help!

  8. Hello there, I have just found your blog at Sarah's. Your cupboards look great...would you consider using no knobs and installing those interiors fittings that allow you to just push the door to open or close. Alternatively perhaps knobs on the end cupboards and nothing on the middle ones as they look a bit like panels under the window box. We did a similar thing at home in Australia in our new kitchen. The cupboard doors under the bay window were made to look like the kitchen but without knobs...so they just looked like panels. Otherwise, I would go for knob 3, as I like the screw in the middle...it adds interest without too much metal. Robx

  9. Oh I'm so glad someone mentioned Anthropologie! I live in an apartment right now, but I have sworn for years that when my husband and I finally get a house, we are COVERING the cabinets with knobs from Anthropologie.

  11. I LOVE the crystal/glass knobs and have been adding them all over our house. I've too found some great knobs at Anthropologie for a cabinet in our home. Good luck! Excited to see what you decide!

  13. Thank you for your feedback and suggestions. I love that you each have a different point of view - helps me see things in a different perspective!

I'm intrigued by the idea of adding knobs to the end cabinets and not the window seat section...allows for more ornate hardware without being overwhelming.

  14. paint the doors off-white and the wood knobs to match. You would have to do this when you are feeling a little less lazy :-)
